Durham Happenings: March 2023

Coming in like a lion, you won’t have to worry about being idle in March with so many choices of activities. From holiday-oriented to civic engagement to drag shows, there’s seriously something for everyone in Durham this month.

Sat, Mar. 4 th , 10:30am – 12pm: ENGAGEDurham Comprehensive Plan In-Person Meeting at Campus Hills (2000 S Alston Ave, 27707)

 While maybe not the sexiest activity going on this month, participating in Engage Durham’s Comprehensive Plan open house is certainly a worthwhile way to spend your morning. At this final of four in-person meetings you’ll have the chance to learn about the draft Comprehensive Plan and provide feedback to ensure it is equitable for all Durham residents. Sat, Mar. 4 th , 5 – 7:30pm: Durham Bulls Spring Fan Fest at Durham Bulls Athletic Park (409 Blackwell St, 27701)

 Let’s play ball! Kick off the Durham Bulls Spring season at Fan Fest. Wool E Bull and Ripken the Bat Dog will be posing for pics with fans. Kids and adults can practice batting and playing catch on the actual field where the National Champs play. Even if you’re little one isn’t big enough to swing a bat, there’s plenty of engaging activities for the whole family. Free tickets are available here so snag one before they’re all gone.

Sat, Mar. 4 th , 7pm: OutRAGEous: A Burlesque and Variety Show for Abortion Rights at the Pinhook (117 W Main St, 27701)

 Join The Pinhook for an evening of burlesque to raise money for The Carolina Abortion Fund. A $15 ticket will gain you entry to performances, raffles, vendors, and more surprises, including

Sun, Mar. 5 th , 11am – 2pm: Crape Myrtle Festival Drag Brunch at Clouds Brewing Durham (905 W Main St, 27701)

 Enjoy a brunch buffet while being entertained by incredible drag performers at Clouds Brewing in Durham. The Crape Myrtle Festival started in the 80s and supports services for the LGBTQ+ community and people living with HIV. Named for the crape myrtle, “a flower that blooms in the most oppressive of climates – the heat of the southern summer,” celebrates and honors the accomplishments and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and is now launching events in Durham. For $35, you get a delicious brunch buffet, amazing performances, and a donation to support wonderful local organizations.

Mon, Mar. 6 th – Sat, Mar 11 th : Hayti Heritage Film Festival Online and at Hayti Heritage Center (804 Old Fayetteville St, 27701)

 The Hayti Heritage Film Festival is back with options for both virtual showings and in-person events. Starting on Mon, Mar. 6 th , check out the incredible array of virtual screenings that you can pre-order and watch from your own home. The in-person events begin on Thurs, Mar. 9th with documentaries and feature films running all day long at the Hayti Heritage Center from 10am – 8:30pm through Sat, Mar. 11 th . Check the schedule to explore film topics, such as hazing, family, Afrofuturism, and animation. Tickets for both online and in-person events are $8.

Sat, Mar. 11 th , 12 – 10pm: Hi-Wire Brewing Durham 4 th Anniversary Party (800 Taylor St, 27701)

 Come celebrate the 4 th anniversary of Hi-Wire coming to Durham. This all-day party will feature a pop-up market with local vendors and a free drag show from 7-9pm. The event is free to attend, but Hi-Wire is selling specialty anniversaries glassware for $12 in advance (including a flagship pour) or $15 at the door (no pour included).

Sat, Mar. 18 th – Sat, Mar. 25 th : Creek Week across Durham

 Since 2009, Keep Durham Beautiful has hosted its annual Creek Week to discover and clean up our local streams. You can register your cleanup or find a cleanup to participate in on their website. In addition to cleanups, there are tons of free educational events, hikes, and paid group paddles scheduled for the week. Get outside and learn about how we can better our community and the environment around us.

Fri, Mar. 24 th , 7 – 9pm: Fourth Friday Fire at West Point on the Eno (5253 N Roxboro Rd, 27704)

 While the days are warming up, the evenings stay quite chilly and there’s nothing better than warming up next to a crackling campfire. Each month, Durham Parks and Rec hosts a roaring campfire at various parks across the city and in March, Fourth Friday Fire will take place at West Point on the Eno. These events have been known to break out some tasty s’mores, so bring your family and snuggle up next to the fire. No registration is required for this free event.

Sat, Mar. 25 th , 9am – 6pm: Highland Games at Mystic Farm and Distillery (1212 North Mineral Springs Rd, 27703)

 The Scottish Cultural Organization of the Triangle presents the Mystic Highland Games, a full day of athletics, dance, and piping representing the roots of Scotland. The athletics competition consists of seven events, including caber toss, hammer throw, and stone put. Bag pipers and highland dangers will also compete throughout the day and Scottish food and vendors will be for sale as well. Tickets cost $20 per person age 21+ and parking is $20 per vehicle.

Sat, Mar. 25 th , 12 – 3pm: The Coco Drip at Forest Hills Field (1639 University Dr, 27707)

 Started by two NCCU alums, The Coco Drip is an event featuring Black woman-owned businesses. The Coco Drip is traveling around the Southeast and coming to Durham on March 25 th to bring the community stellar vendors. Products and services will include jewelry, skincare products, makeup, crafts, desserts, and food trucks. There are still some vendor spots available, so if you know anyone who is interested, please share. Celebrate Women’s History Month and support Black women entrepreneurs at The Coco Drip.
