Durham Happenings: April 2023
If you’ve been waiting for warm (or wacky) Spring weather before checking out what’s going on in Durham, it’s time to hop to it! Between temps rising and falling and hiding from The Pollening, be sure to see all the incredible events happening in town this month. April not only brings us Easter celebrations and egg hunts, but also festivals such as NC Sci Fest and Library Fest, ways to get physical like Crop Walk and Beer Mile, plus tons of other ways to engage with our city and its beautiful residents.
Easter Hoppenings
Looking for ways to celebrate Easter festivities with your kids (or dogs)? Luckily there are multiple, non- denominational opportunities to hunt for Easter eggs and get pics with the Easter bunny throughout Durham.
Sat, Apr. 1 st , 10am – 12pm: Egg Hunt at West Point on the Eno (5101 N Roxboro St, 27704)
Sat, Apr. 1 st , 10 – 11am: Egg Hunt at Campus Hills (2000 S Alston Ave, 27707)
Durham Parks and Rec hosts their 36 th annual Egg Hunt for kids up to age 12 at two locations: Campus Hills and West Point on the Eno. Egg hunts by age group will start at 10:15am and will be followed by games and crafts. Be sure to brush up on your search skills since the person that finds the golden egg wins an extra prize! There is no cost to participate and registration is not required.
Sat, Apr. 1 st , 12 – 1pm: Dog-Gone Egg Hunt at West Point on the Eno (5101 N Roxboro St, 27704)
Following the kiddo egg hunt, DPR is hosting a canine-focused egg hunt starting at 12pm at West Point on the Eno. Don’t let the kids have all the fun; let your pooch join in on the Easter-themed fun and search for their own eggs. There is no cost to participate and registration is not required.
Sat, Apr. 1 st ; Sun, Apr. 2 nd ; Sat, Apr. 8 th ; Sun, Apr. 9 th : Easter Eggstravaganza at Old Mill Farm (8913 NC Hwy 751, 27713)
Four weekend dates, hours of family fun! Old Mill Farm in South Durham is hosting an Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturdays and Sundays through April 9 th . In addition to a classic Easter egg hunt, there will be live music, photos with the Easter Bunny, crafts and games. You must pre-register for a 3-hour block (10:30am-1:30pm [Saturdays only] or 1:30-4:30pm) and prices are $12/person (ages 3+) or $40 for a family 4-pack.
Tues, Apr. 4 th – Sun, Apr. 9 th : Dino Egg Hunt at Museum of Life and Science (433 W Murray Ave, 27704)
With a prehistoric twist on the classic Easter egg hunt, the Museum of Life and Science invites members and guests to participate in the excavation of dinosaur eggs and fossils as junior paleontologists. Exchange colorful dino eggs for a special prize and you can also enjoy giant dino skeleton puzzles and take selfies along the Museum’s Dinosaur Trail. Tickets cost $7/person (ages 3+) on top of Museum admission. Registration is required for a timed entry and spots are filling up, sign up soon.

Sat, Apr. 8 th , 10:15 – 11:30am: Spring Egg Hunt at Duke Homestead (2828 Duke Homestead Rd, 27705)
The historic home and farm of Washington Duke and his family offers several special events each year, including the Spring Egg Hunt. This free event includes eggs hidden around the property that can be turned in for prizes as well as egg-themed games, historic games, and a puppet show. There are three different times and zones for the egg hunts: 0-3 years starts at 10:15am; 4-7 years at 10:30am; and 8-12 years at 11am. This event is free and does not require registration.
NC Science Fest
The NC Science Festival is a month-long celebration of all things science every April. Though it is an initiative of Chapel Hill’s Morehead Planetarium, NC Sci Fest hosts events across the state, including a robust series right here in Durham. From adult-focused beer nights to family-friendly celebrations, check out which events you’ll be swinging by this month.

Durham County Library Fest
In recognition of National Library Week, Durham County Library will host its Third Annual Library Fest from April 24 th through April 29 th . This weeklong celebration includes some incredible events, such as talks with authors, music performances, kid-friendly STEM play, and an adults-only evening at the new Main Library. Additionally, all week long, you can visit nearly two dozen local businesses serving library-inspired items and free Library Fest pins! Here are just a few highlights of the 30+ events:

Mon, Apr. 24 th , 6:30 – 8pm: Storytelling and Reading by Terry McMillan at Carolina Theatre (309 West Morgan St, 27701)
Author of New York Times #1 bestsellers “Waiting to Exhale” and “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” will be diving into themes of her books and personal life, such as relationships, addiction, and health issues. The event will host a talk and reading as well as a book signing, with books available for purchase from Letters Bookshop. Event is free to attend, but tickets are required to reserve a spot.

Watch a live show from Master Puppeteer Jeghetto at any of the six library locations. The family-friendly show will be followed with an opportunity to interact with the hand-made puppets. This is a free show with no registration, but seating is first come first serve.
Sat, Apr. 29 th , 7 – 10pm: All Booked Up at Main Library (300 N Roxboro St, 27701)
This adults-only after-hours party takes place in the architectural wonder that is the new Main Library downtown. Dress in festive attire and enjoy live demonstrations of the 3D printers and button makers, library dance party with a DJ, and behind the scenes access and tours. Included in your $75 ticket are hors d’oeuvres from Gocciolina and Toast as well as drinks from Piedmont Wine Imports and Ponysaurus.
Other Noteworthy Community Events
Beyond Easter and the various festivals, April brings with it so much to do in Durham, it’s hard to pick. Get involved in our community, shop local, and celebrate so many special occasions around town.
Sun, Apr. 2 nd , 1:30 – 3:30pm: Durham CROP Hunger Walk at Duke Chapel (401 Chapel Dr, 27705)
Meet at Duke Chapel on Sunday afternoon to participate in the 49 th annual CROP Hunger Walk. Donations made by and to walkers support hunger alleviation programs, including Church World Service and Durham Congregations in Action. Register as an individual or join a team. Then share on social media why you walk as you participate in #DurhamCROPWalk.
Mon, Apr. 10 th , 4:30 – 6:30pm: Cheers for Childcare at the Pinhook (117 W Main St, 27701)
In preparation for a statewide advocacy day in Raleigh on Apr. 20 th , the Pinhook is hosting an event for educators and community members to learn more about the issues facing early childcare providers, such as low wages and minimal state investment. There will be education on how to get involved as well as activities for kids, like face painting and art-making. Early childhood educators drink free!
Sat, Apr. 15 th , 5:30 – 9pm: Food Truck Rodeo at Borden Brick (618 Ramseur St, 27701)
Haven’t heard of Borden Brick? You’re not alone. With only minimal social media presence and no website, it seems to be a trendy, new retail entertainment complex across the street from Ponysaurus. Want to find out more while noshing on grub from 10 different food trucks and drinking some Lonerider beer? Then swing by on Sat evening for their first food truck rodeo.
Sat, Apr. 15 th , 6 – 11pm: Social Justice and Racial Equity Institute Launch Gala at NCCU (500 Nelson St, 27707)
North Carolina Central University’s Law School is launching The Social Justice and Racial Equity Institute (SJREI) and you are invited to the gala. The mission of the SJREI is “to address systemic racism and other forms of inequality through interdisciplinary problem solving that addresses the legacy of racial injustice and advances a just and prosperous society for all people.” The launch gala will feature legendary civil rights lawyer and NCCU law professor Irving Joyner. Tickets to the gala are $25 or $20 for students.

Sun, Apr. 16 th , 1 – 4pm: Black Farmers Market Kick-off at Durham Tech (1637 E Lawson St, 27703)
The Black Farmers Market returns for the 2023 season with a kick-off in Durham. The market will now take place at Durham Tech and alternate every other week with the Southeast Raleigh YMCA. The Black Farmers Market was established to fight food apartheid, healthy living misconceptions, and to support local Black farmers. Jumpstart this market season on the 16 th .
Mon, Apr. 17 th , 4 – 6pm: Durham Community Safety Department HEART Open House at City Hall (101 City Hall Plaza, 27701)
Last year, Durham launched a ground-breaking crisis response pilot program called HEART (Holistic Empathetic Assistance Response Teams). These professionals respond to individuals experiencing non-violent mental health crises or quality of life concerns and meet them unarmed, with empathy. On April 17 th , you can meet the HEART Team at City Hall and learn more about the incredible work they’ve done thus far. It’s worth noting that there is a push to fund this pilot to be available city-wide, so come see for yourself what the fuss is about.
Sat, Apr. 22 nd , 8am – 12:30pm: Angels Among Us 5K and Walk at Duke Medical Center Campus (2011 Yearby Ave, 27705)
Support the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center by joining the 30 th anniversary of Angels Among us 5K and Walk for Hope. Register as an individual or a team to raise money for brain tumor research and education, then run or walk around Duke’s beautiful campus and Sarah P. Duke Gardens. There will be a silent auction, food vendors, and new this year is: a Kids’ Dash. Registration for the 5K is $40, walk is $30, and Kids’ Dash is $10.
Sat, Apr. 22 nd , 9am – 1pm: Pauli Murray Pilgrimage at Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice (906 Carroll St, 27701)
Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray was a Durham icon. They were a civil rights activist and lawyer, poet, Episcopal priest, and human rights champion. Learn more about Murray’s history and legacy by visiting stops of significance across Durham. You can drive or walk the 4.5-mile loop starting at the Pauli Murray Center at any time between 9am-1pm; the journey should take at least 2 hours. The event is free, but registration is required.
Sun, Apr. 23 rd , 12 – 5pm: Durham Earth Day Festival at Durham Central Park (501 Foster St, 27701)
Celebrate the birth of the modern environmental movement with Durham Parks and Recreation at the Earth Day Festival. Peruse the Earth Day Market for environmentally friendly businesses and organizations. Explore Durham’s Sustainable Transportation Expo thanks to the City’s Transportation Dept and Bike Durham. Make your own percussion instrument and join the Earth Day Parade. And don’t forget to bring your old file papers for the free document shredding. Food vendors and music/dance performances will take place all afternoon as well.
Sat, Apr. 29 th , 2:30 – 7pm: Bull City Beer Mile at Durham Central Park (501 Foster St, 27701)
Co-sponsored by Bull City Running Company and The Glass Jug Beer Lab, Durham’s only official beer mile involves drinking a full beer and running ¼ mile four times, totaling four beers and 1 mile. Participants can register as an individual ($50) or relay teams of 2 ($75) or 4 ($100). Hang out all afternoon to enjoy the various heats as well as food trucks and Glass Jug beer.
