Durham Happenings: August 2024
In August, we head into the “Sunday scaries” of summer, anxiously trying to squeeze the most out the last few weeks of hot weather, vacations, and fun in the sun. Yet you’ll still find no shortage of fantastic events and opportunities to explore Bull City. This month, I wanted to highlight a few more unique experiences on the calendar, which I bundled into what I can only describe as “Unique Movie Viewing Experiences” and “Fancy Cars and Friends.” Check these out to see if they’re your vibe and be sure to see which of the other thousand August events will tickle your fancy this month.
But before I get to those events, I invite you to participate in the Downtown Durham Feast and Shop! Downtown Durham Inc is hosting a series of drawings throughout the summer encouraging folks to eat, drink, and now shop local. Anytime you make a purchase at one of downtown’s businesses (restaurants, bars, retailers, etc), you can submit a copy of your receipt to be entered to win one of the weekly raffle prize baskets. Week Three of the Feast ends on Aug 4 th and Week Four ends on Aug 11 th . So get shopping!
Unique Movie Viewing Experiences
Sure, blockbuster films at your traditional movie theater are a hallmark of summertime. But, as you know, we do things a little differently here in Durham. Below are several options for movie watching this month that can help break up the monotony of your usual “dinner and a movie” routine.

Fancy Cars and Friends
Do you have a soft spot for a revving engine and a revving heart rate? Then have I got some friends for you! There are two groups (probably more) that meet regularly in Durham to showcase their fancy cars and grab a bite or a beverage together. As a non-car person, I’ll probably get this wrong, but I believe they’re referred to as a “cruise in,” or a laid-back event where you park your car with fellow car folks to show off and talk shop.
